Thank you, thank you for giving me the Godat Award. I am humbled by the honor. This means a whole lot to me.

One of the biggest reasons it means a lot to me is because this award symbolizes our whole LGBT community. Gays, lesbians, bi’s and everyone – the whole queer family.

Our whole family is always important to me, but it is especially important now, in these days when intolerance is allowed to run loose in the land. When the government – our government — is refusing to protect our children, is trying to revoke our marriages and take away our health care. Where the federal government is sending out police to arrest grandmothers, and religious zealots are urged to humiliate us when we go to the bathroom.

Yes, this is a hard time, and community is more important to us now more than ever. Now is the time for us to realize that we’re all in this together. We all need to stand together in the face of this assault on our safety and dignity.

Together we’re a formidable force. Together we can resist this onslaught and go on to create a just, fair, world. We’re all in this together.

Building community is the way we do that. Community is the way we create and nurture the relationships that are so essential if we are to prevail and thrive together. Community is what we are doing here today, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in this process.

Thank you for giving me the Godat Award.
