“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” Don’t Matter: Transgender Veterans’ Forum

Repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” does nothing to protect service members from discharge or disciplinary action if they are transgender or transsexual. Hear from veterans who experienced the worst of our government’s military policies first-hand. Learn how to find transgender-friendly providers and services at the local Veteran’s Administration, and even how to successfully navigate transition within the VA medical maze. Free.
Dezert Girlz Monthly Meeting

Support and social group for all kinds of people who were assigned male gender at birth, but who do not feel that is an accurate description or complete expression of their identity. In 2006, activists in San Francisco mobilized to create a memorial to a previously forgotten event, a 1966 riot at Comptons Cafeteria that started that city’s transgender movement. Sparked by Victor Silverman and Susan Strykers film, "Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria," the movement for a memorial demonstrated the power that remembering the past holds for community activists today. Victor Silverman, co-director/producer of the film Screaming Queens (which will screen at the Loft Cinema on Sunday November 18), will show clips from the film, images of the memorial, and discuss how history, film, and activism can interact.

The International Transgender Day of Remembrance is a time to honor and mourn those who have died in the past year and to raise awareness of hate crimes against transgender people and people who are targeted because of their gender identity and/or gender expression. The outdoor service will feature comments from local community members, a reading of the names of the dead, and a candle-lighting ceremony at the park followed by a sunset procession down Fourth Avenue and a reception at Wingspan.
