The Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA) would like to inform the community about four proposed Arizona bills that, if passed, will have severe ramifications for trans and non-binary students and individuals in Arizona.
The three proposed bills include: House Bill 2080, House Bill 2081, and House Bill 2082.
- House Bill 2080 would require that birth certificates adhere to the male/female binary.
- House Bill 2081 would require government agencies to refer to individuals as either male or female on all legal documents.
- House Bill 2082 would allow public school employees to misgender and deadname trans and non-binary students based on the sex listed on their birth certificate.
The fourth bill that has been proposed to the Senate is Senate Bill 1082.
- Senate Bill 1082 would prohibit talking about LGBTQ+ language in sexual education and make it a fireable offense.
SAGA opposes these four bills as they are an attack on the transgender community by furthering the perpetuation of violence against transgender individuals.
Trans and non-binary individuals who identify outside of the gender binary will be erased from the legal system and public spaces, and trans students will not feel safe and welcomed in school.
It is urgent that the community and allies contact President of the Senate Karen Fann and let her know that House Bill 1082 will cause irreparable harm to an already vulnerable group of Arizona citizens.
